Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between an inlay, an onlay and a crown?
An inlay is bonded inside a partly damaged tooth. An onlay also rebuilds a biting cusp. A crown covers the whole tooth. Onlays are preferred when possible because they keep more healthy tooth and are equally strong.
Do you place silver fillings?
No. Southern York Smile Care is mercury-free: fillings are tooth-colored and BPA-free, and bond directly to the tooth.
When do I need a root canal?
When decay or a fracture reaches the pulp inside the tooth and infects it. The canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed, often followed by a crown.
Bridge or implant?
A bridge is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap. An implant doesn't depend on neighboring teeth, which is why it's often the better choice.
What are crowns made of?
All-porcelain crowns, which have no metal edge to show at the gum line and are matched to the shade of the teeth beside them. They suit front and back teeth.
Can a broken tooth be fixed in one visit?
Often, yes. A small chip can be bonded the same day, and a larger break can be protected the same day while the permanent repair is made. Call (717) 235-3871 as soon as it happens, and keep any piece of the tooth.
Do you make dentures?
Yes, full and partial dentures. For people tired of a loose denture, snap-on implant teeth or All-on-4 hold the teeth firmly in place, and the consultation compares the options and costs.
What happens if I lose a tooth and do nothing?
The teeth on either side slowly drift into the gap, the opposite tooth can grow down, and the bone where the root was shrinks. Replacing the tooth, with an implant, bridge or denture, prevents that.
Are root canals done in the office?
Yes. A root canal removes infected tissue from inside the tooth and seals it, usually followed by a crown to protect it. Modern numbing means most patients feel little more than with a filling.
