Do I need my wisdom teeth out?
Not always. If they come in straight, we advise keeping them clean and using them like any other tooth. If there's no room, or they are impacted, we recommend removal. A panoramic x-ray helps decide.
Recovery
Plan on 48 to 72 hours of rest. The gum usually clots and swelling goes down in 2 to 4 days, and the site is fully healed in 2 to 3 weeks.

Frequently asked questions
Is a tooth extraction oral surgery?
It is oral surgery when the gum has to be opened to remove the tooth, and the site is closed with stitches. Removing a tooth that is fully exposed is a simple extraction.
How can I heal faster after oral surgery?
Follow your aftercare instructions. Rest, eat soft foods rich in vitamins, use a cold compress, and take any medication prescribed. Avoid tobacco and alcohol for at least 24 hours.
How long should I rest after oral surgery?
Allow 48 to 72 hours. After that, pain and swelling should be minimal, and you can go back to work and normal activity.
How long does recovery take?
The gum clots and swelling goes down in 2 to 4 days. The site is fully healed 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.
What are the signs of a spreading tooth infection?
Redness, swelling and pain, sometimes with fever, tiredness, flushed skin or headaches. A spreading infection is life threatening. Call (717) 235-3871 right away, or go to the emergency room if you can't reach us.
Can I get an implant after an extraction?
Yes. Up to 50% of the bone that supports an implant can shrink away in the first year. Grafting at the time of extraction helps preserve it, and an implant can go in as early as 6 to 8 weeks later.
