When can I be seen?
We see dental emergencies for our current patients, the same day whenever possible, and on weekends for a true emergency. If you're new to the practice, we'll see you when there's an opening in the schedule. Call (717) 235-3871 as early in the day as you can, and we'll tell you the soonest time we have.
Knocked-out tooth?
Put the tooth in milk to preserve it, and come straight to our office. Call (717) 235-3871 on the way.
What does an emergency visit cost?
Most emergency visits are paid at the time of service, and we file your insurance claim for you. For a new patient, the exam, x-rays and treatment generally start at about $600.

Dr. Steven Haywood, DDS, can treat many dental emergencies, and can take a dental CT scan right in the office when a broken jaw is suspected.

Frequently asked questions
Is a chipped tooth an emergency?
Yes, when the nerve is damaged or exposed. Left untreated, the tooth may not be repairable and may need to be removed and replaced.
Are bleeding gums an emergency?
Bleeding gums are usually a sign of gum disease, and sometimes of a wider health problem. A deep cleaning can clear infection in the gums, but bleeding that continues needs medical attention.
How do I ease nerve pain in a tooth?
Tylenol or Advil can help. Keep the tooth clean, avoid very cold foods, and chew on the other side. For a hole in a back tooth, temporary filling material from the drug store may help.
Can a chipped tooth heal itself?
No. Enamel has no blood supply, so it can't repair itself. If the nerve is exposed, prompt care from Dr. Haywood may avoid a root canal or extraction. Please call right away.
What are the signs of a spreading tooth infection?
Redness, swelling and pain, sometimes with fever, tiredness, flushed skin or headaches. A spreading infection is life threatening. Call (717) 235-3871 right away, or go to the emergency room if you can't reach us.
What if I don't fix a bad tooth?
A broken, rotted or chipped tooth harms your oral health. An infection can start and spread to other parts of the body.
