What happens at your first visit
Step 1Getting to know you
When we meet for the first time, we talk through your dental concerns and what you would like to change. In some cases, treatment can be completed at this first appointment.
Step 2A careful dental exam
We check your teeth and gums and ask about your general health. We take X-rays and photos, and make models that let us study your bite and any jaw joint (TMJ) issues.
Step 3Your treatment plan
When your history is complex or a plan needs the records we gather, a second visit goes over your options and schedules treatment around your goals.

Questions new patients ask
Is Southern York Smile Care accepting new patients?
Yes. Dr. Steven Haywood, DDS welcomes new patients of all ages at 4 S. Main St in Shrewsbury, PA, including patients from York, York County and northern Baltimore County, Maryland. Call (717) 235-3871 or request an appointment online.
Can treatment be done at my first appointment?
In some cases, yes, although a full evaluation of your dental needs is an important first step. If you have a special event coming up and need treatment at your first visit, tell us when you book so we can plan for it.
How should I prepare for my first visit?
Think about how you would rate your smile, or your ability to chew, on a scale of 1 to 10, and what you would like for the health and look of your smile in 5 or 10 years. Bring a list of your questions and any pictures that help show what you want.
What should I tell you about my health?
Please tell us about any existing medical conditions before surgical treatment, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, rheumatic fever, artificial joints or heart valves. We also need to know about the medications you take, such as aspirin, blood thinners, heart medications, or any other prescription or over-the-counter medicine.
I’m nervous about the dentist. Can you help?
Please tell us. Understanding your fears helps us plan how to overcome them with you, and we also offer sedation dentistry.
Can my child be seen without a parent?
No. A parent or legal guardian must be present at the consultation of a patient under the age of 18.
Do you take my insurance?
We don’t participate with any insurance company, as we are privately owned, but we submit your paperwork on your behalf so you can be reimbursed for covered procedures. We also work with health savings and flex plans.
What if I need to cancel?
Please give us at least 72 business hours’ notice. Missed appointments and appointments cancelled with less notice incur a fee of $120 or the cost of the appointment.
