For dental fear, a strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth, or long visits you'd rather not remember.

Oral sedation

Health review before your visit

More done in fewer visits

Is oral sedation right for me?

Oral sedation is a small pill taken an hour before your visit. It helps with moderate to severe anxiety, a strong gag reflex or a long appointment. Dr. Haywood reviews your health and medications at your consultation to make sure it suits you. Laughing gas is available in the Timonium office.

Will I need a driver?

Yes. After oral sedation you'll feel groggy for a few hours, so plan for someone to drive you to and from your visit.

Who is sedation for?

People with dental anxiety or a phobia, a bad gag reflex, low pain tolerance or sensitive nerves, a bad past experience, a fear of dental tools, or a long procedure ahead.

Get the care you've been putting off

Fear keeps many people away from the dentist until small problems become big ones. The best sedation dentistry in the area lets you relax through your treatment, and often get more done in one visit.

Benefits

Relax through your treatment.

Calm instead of anxious

Sedation eases dental anxiety and fear, from a mild edge to a deep phobia.

Easier with a gag reflex

Relaxed muscles make treatment possible for people who gag easily.

Comfortable if you're sensitive

Helps with low pain tolerance and sensitive oral nerves.

Longer visits, fewer of them

More treatment can be done in one appointment, so you come in less often.

You may remember little

With oral sedation you stay awake but will likely forget most of the visit.

“I just recently had surgery there. I'm young and had a lot of work done, which no one my age should ever have to experience. With that being said, the warmth tender care, and compassion they showed and gave 100% of the time was absolutely incredible. …”

Frequently asked questions

Will I benefit from sedation?

If anxiety, fear, a strong gag reflex or sensitivity has kept you from the care you need, sedation can help you get it comfortably.

How long will I be sedated?

From two to six hours, depending on the dose and the length of your procedure. Dr. Haywood explains this at your consultation.

How do you make sure sedation is safe for me?

Before recommending oral sedation, Dr. Haywood at Southern York Smile Care reviews your health history and the medications you take, and you get clear instructions about eating, drinking and arranging a driver.

What does sedation cost?

Oral sedation is a one-time fee of $405, good for life. Because you're relaxed for several hours, it is often best value to have more work done at one time.

Are there lasting effects?
