About dental crowns

A crown covers a tooth that is too broken or worn for a filling, restoring its shape and strength. Read about all-porcelain crowns, the implant bridge for missing teeth, and restorative dentistry. A crown is usually suggested when a tooth has a large old filling, a crack that runs deep, or has had a root canal and become brittle. Southern York Smile Care uses all-porcelain crowns, which have no metal edge to show at the gum line and are matched to the shade of the teeth beside them. A crowned tooth still needs brushing and flossing: the tooth underneath can decay at the edge of the crown, and the gum around it can still become inflamed. If a crown comes loose or cracks, keep it, avoid chewing on that side and call the office; many can be cleaned and cemented back. These articles cover when a crown is the right choice, when a filling or an onlay is enough, how long a crown can last, and what to do if one breaks. For a tooth that is already missing, an implant with a crown on top replaces the root as well as the tooth.
