Invisalign vs. Mail Order Aligners

Invisalign vs. mail order aligners comes down to one thing: whether a dentist examines your teeth, gums and bone before anything moves. Mail-order kits skip that step, and that is where the risk starts. Here is what to know before you order.

You have probably seen the ads. Straighten your teeth from home, skip the dentist, save money. If you have wanted a straighter smile for years, it sounds like an easy win. But moving teeth is a medical treatment, not a beauty product. This article explains how tooth movement works, what can go wrong without supervision, and how doctor-guided Invisalign at Southern York Smile Care in Shrewsbury, PA is different.

How teeth actually move

Teeth are not set in concrete. Each root sits in a socket of bone, held by a thin ligament. When an aligner presses on a tooth, the bone on one side slowly breaks down and new bone forms on the other side. Over weeks and months, the tooth travels through the bone.

That is a living, biological process. It goes well when the roots are healthy, the bone is thick enough and the gums are free of infection. It can go badly when they are not. A tooth with thin bone around it, a short root or active gum disease can loosen, recede or even be lost if it is pushed in the wrong direction. You cannot see any of that by looking in a mirror or pressing putty against your teeth.

The problem with do-it-yourself aligners

No exam and no X-rays

Mail-order companies usually work from an impression you take at home or a quick scan, plus a few photos. Those show only the crowns of your teeth, the part above the gums. They do not show root length, bone levels, old root canals, cavities or hidden gum disease. Moving teeth without that information means treating blind.

The bite gets overlooked

Lining up the front teeth so they look straight is the easy part. Making sure your upper and lower teeth meet correctly when you chew is the hard part. If the bite is not planned, people can end up with back teeth that no longer touch, front teeth that hit too hard, or new strain on the jaw joints. A bite problem can lead to worn or chipped teeth, jaw soreness and headaches, and it is much harder to fix after the fact.

Nobody is watching along the way

Teeth do not always move exactly as a computer plan predicts. With in-office treatment, your dentist checks your progress and adjusts the plan when a tooth lags behind. With a mail-order kit, a problem may not be noticed until the trays are finished. By then, the damage may already be done.

How Invisalign treatment works at Southern York Smile Care

Dr. Steven Haywood, DDS, is an Elite Invisalign Provider with more than 35 years in practice. Treatment starts with a full look at your mouth, not just your smile.

  • A complete exam. Dr. Haywood checks your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints, and treats any cavities or gum disease before teeth start to move.
  • Imaging that shows what is under the gums. Digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than older film X-rays. When roots and bone need a closer look, the Green CT 3D cone beam scanner shows them in three dimensions. See our dental technology page for more.
  • A digital scan instead of putty. The iTero Element 3D scanner builds an accurate model of your teeth in minutes, with no messy impression trays.
  • A plan for the whole bite. Each tooth movement is planned so the result looks good and works well when you chew.
  • Attachments when they are needed. Small tooth-colored bumps can be bonded to certain teeth so the aligners can grip and turn them. Plain trays without these have a hard time with rotations and some other movements.
  • Regular check-ins. Short visits let the team confirm that teeth are tracking and that your gums stay healthy.

Invisalign comes in several forms. Invisalign Teen is designed for younger patients, and Invisalign Express can suit mild crowding or spacing. You can read more on our Invisalign clear aligners page. Southern York Smile Care does not offer metal braces. For some patients who want a fast change in how their front teeth look, instant orthodontics with porcelain veneers is another option to discuss.

Questions to ask before choosing any aligner

Whichever way you go, these questions will help you judge the care you are getting:

  1. Will a licensed dentist examine me in person before treatment starts?
  2. Will X-rays be taken to check my roots and bone?
  3. Will my gums and any cavities be treated first?
  4. Is my bite part of the plan, or only the front teeth?
  5. Who do I see if a tray does not fit or a tooth feels loose?
  6. What happens after the trays are done, and how will my result be kept in place with retainers?

If the answers are vague, that tells you something.

Keeping your new smile straight

Teeth tend to drift back toward where they started, especially in the first months after treatment while the bone settles around them. That is why every aligner plan should end with retainers and a clear set of instructions for wearing them. At the end of treatment, your bite is checked once more and you go home with retainers and clear instructions for wearing them. Wearing them as directed is the simplest way to protect the time and money you have put into straightening your teeth.

The real cost of doing it wrong

The most expensive treatment is the one you pay for twice. When teeth are moved without a proper exam, the fix can involve more aligner treatment, gum care, crowns or even replacing a lost tooth. A straight smile is worth doing right the first time.

Southern York Smile Care is out of network with every insurer. You pay at the visit, and the office files the claim with your insurance company for reimbursement. Invisalign can be paid monthly after a down payment, and CareCredit and Cherry payment plans are also available. Kelley Fisher, our Patient Care and Treatment Coordinator, can explain your options. See our financing page for details.

Is Invisalign right for you?

Invisalign can treat crowding, gaps, crooked teeth and many bite problems in teens and adults. A consultation will tell you whether your case is a good fit, about how long it may take, and whether anything else should be treated first. If you are deciding between straightening and cosmetic work, our article on veneers or Invisalign can help.
