Celebrity smiles in Shrewsbury are closer than you think, because most famous smiles come from a dentist's chair, not from luck. At Southern York Smile Care, Dr. Steven Haywood uses the same cosmetic treatments behind red-carpet smiles to help everyday people love their teeth.

How do movie stars and news anchors always look ready for a close-up? Do they skip coffee? Not likely. Celebrity magazines are full of photos of famous people carrying coffee cups. Do they all avoid tobacco? Some do, but plenty of actors and models with dazzling smiles do not. The real secret is simpler than that.

The secret behind famous smiles

Very few people, famous or not, are born with perfect teeth. Well, no one is born with teeth at all, but you know what we mean. Most celebrity smiles are the result of cosmetic dentistry: whitening, veneers, bonding, straightening, or a mix of these.

Look closely at a famous smile and you will often notice the same features:

  • Bright, even color that still looks natural, not chalky
  • Straight, well-spaced teeth with no dark gaps
  • Balanced shape and length, with the front teeth a little longer than the side teeth
  • A smooth smile line that follows the curve of the lower lip
  • Healthy pink gums that frame the teeth evenly

Each of these can be improved. The trick is knowing which treatment does what, and planning them so the final result looks like you on your best day.

Star-quality care, close to home

You do not need to fly to Hollywood for a camera-ready smile. Dr. Haywood has been doing smile makeovers for decades, with more than 35 years in practice. Training includes cosmetic study through the NYU Aesthetic Continuum, and Dr. Haywood was seen on ABC's Extreme Makeover. You can read more on the meet the doctor page.

Every patient gets the same careful planning. That starts with a conversation about what you like and dislike about your smile. Cosmetic imaging can show a preview of your new smile before any work begins, and the iTero Element 3D scanner makes a digital model of your teeth with no messy putty.

What happens at a cosmetic consultation

Your first cosmetic visit is relaxed and unhurried. You will talk about what you would like to change, look at photos of your smile together, and hear which treatments could get you there. Bring photos of smiles you like, even celebrity ones. They help Dr. Haywood understand the look you have in mind, whether that is a soft, natural brightness or a bolder Hollywood white.

Your teeth and gums also get a careful check. Digital X-rays, which use up to 90% less radiation than older film X-rays, show what is going on below the surface. If there is decay or gum disease, that is treated first, because a beautiful smile needs a healthy base. You leave with a clear idea of your options and the order they would happen in.

Teeth whitening: the quick pick-me-up

Teeth whitening is one of the simplest cosmetic treatments, and one of the most popular. It quickly brightens your teeth and can make you want to smile all the time.

Why professional whitening works better

Store-bought strips and toothpastes can help with light surface stains. Professional whitening uses stronger gels under a dentist's care, so results are faster and more even, and your gums are protected. Southern York Smile Care also offers laser whitening, which can brighten teeth by several shades, often from the very first visit.

What whitening can and cannot do

Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. It does not change the color of crowns, veneers or fillings. Some deep stains, such as gray stains from certain antibiotics taken in childhood, may not fully respond to whitening. In those cases, veneers or bonding may be a better choice. Your teeth may feel a little sensitive for a day or two after whitening, which usually fades quickly.

Porcelain veneers: the red-carpet favorite

Porcelain veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of the teeth. They are a favorite in cosmetic dentistry because they can fix many problems at once:

  • Misshapen or uneven teeth
  • Chips and small cracks
  • Stains that whitening cannot lift
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are worn down or look short
  • Teeth that are slightly crooked, when full straightening is not needed

Porcelain reflects light much like natural enamel, which is why good veneers look real rather than fake. Preparing a tooth for a veneer is usually minimally invasive. Some newer veneers, called prepless veneers, need little or no drilling, so you keep more of your healthy enamel.

Other treatments behind famous smiles

Whitening and veneers are only two of the cosmetic treatments done at Southern York Smile Care. Others include:

Many famous smiles use two or three of these together. For example, whitening first, then veneers on a few front teeth matched to the new shade. When you want to change several things, a complete smile makeover brings them together into one plan.

Keeping your smile camera-ready

Celebrities keep their smiles bright with steady care, and so can you:

  1. Brush twice a day with a soft brush, and clean between your teeth daily.
  2. Rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine.
  3. Keep your 60-minute cleanings, which polish away surface stains.
  4. Wear a night guard if you grind, to protect veneers and natural teeth.
  5. Ask about touch-up whitening if your shade starts to fade.

It also helps to treat your smile like the rest of your health. Don't smoke, drink plenty of water and go easy on sugary snacks. These habits protect your gums, keep your breath fresh and help any cosmetic work last as long as possible.

The office is out of network with every insurer. You pay at the visit and the office files the claim for you. CareCredit and Cherry payment plans are available; see the financing page.
